Storm Shutters
Save Money By Building Your Own Storm Shutters
Storm shutters are an effective way to reinforce your windows in order to keep your home safe during windy storms and hurricanes. Professionally made storm shutters are expensive, but there is always the option of only spending a fraction of that cost by doing it yourself. They are a necessary precaution that most people will wish they had made in the event that they suffer unnecessary damage to their home from either wind or a solid object breaking the window or other opening.
Any opening to your home, including everything from windows to glass doors, could be a source of damage from debris being carried by a strong storm. Measure these openings precisely to fit sheets of plywood as an effective way to ensure the safety of your home. For the most effective coverage, you should add a few inches to the measurement of the area so that the storm shutters will slightly overlap. This will prevent the plywood from simply being pushed in with the window and serving no real purpose.
After you have measured each opening that you plan to cover with storm shutters, you can purchase simple sheets of plywood at any hardware store. You can either have them cut the sizes you need or you can save money by doing it at home with an electric saw. In addition to the plywood, you will also need to purchase screws to secure the wood over the area it is covering. After the pieces of wood are cut, you should have someone hold the piece into place while you drill through the plywood at least two inches from the edge. Drill through the window frame and the wall at least two inches so that the wood will be secure during the storm. Once you have installed them and are certain that each is the proper fit, remove the storm shutters and screws. Store them in a convenient place so that they will be available as soon as you need them.
Storm shutters are a great way to ensure the safety of your home against strong winds that may break less-solid openings of your home, such as windows. In the event that a window breaks during a storm, your home will be exposed to water, wind, and debris that can cause large amounts of damage to your interior and belongings.
